MP Welcomes Fuel Price Rebate

Andrew George, MP

Scilly’s MP, Andrew George, has welcomed the HM Treasury’s announcement that the islands will be part of a fuel discount pilot scheme aimed at remote island communities.

He says he has consistently pressed the case for fairer fuel prices and especially for remoter areas where prices are highest.

And he says he is “delighted” at the news that the scheme is due to come into effect from March, when islanders will receive a 5p a litre discount on their fuel.

He says drivers in Scilly currently pay the highest fuel bills in the country, adding, “People in remote areas and Islands don’t have the luxury of regular low cost bus and underground services running from their neighbourhoods every 2 to 3 minutes.”

Nike Engineering and Sibley’s will be able to claim back the 5p a litre rebate on the petrol and diesel they sell and will be expected to pass on the full saving to the customer.

The Government has eased concerns from retailers that this could cause them cash flow problems by allowing them to claim the rebate from January, three months before it must be passed on to customers.
