The Isles of Scilly will get cheaper petrol next year.

This follows an announcement today from the Treasury that, from March 2012, motorists in remote island communities will benefit from a 5p a litre fuel discount.

Other areas to benefit from the scheme include the Inner & Outer Hebrides, Northern Isles and islands in the Clyde.

The rebate was announced earlier this year but the Government had been waiting for final EU clearance before giving it the green light.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, said, “This is terrific news for island communities, which have long suffered the effects of high fuel costs.”

He added, “We have also delivered on a promise to help address the persistent unfairness of some of the lowest income communities in the country paying among the highest pump prices.”

In response to initial confusion about how retailers would apply the rebate, Mr Alexander said that the scheme was designed to protect the cash flow of local retailers.

Retailers will start claiming the 5p rebate from January 1st next year, although this won’t need to be passed on to the consumer until March 1st.
