Bank Staff Bring In The Cash

Cakes for sale at Barclays Bank yesterday

Children in Need was a more low-key affair in Scilly last night without fancy dress or the pub collections you may experience on the mainland.

The biggest fundraiser was arranged by staff at Barclays Bank in Hugh Town, who raised £446 for Children in Need yesterday.

And Barclays have matched every pound given.

Becca Campion, Beth Reseigh and Linda Wood baked cakes and biscuits to sell over the counter on Friday. Lindsey Rodgers also donated baked items to the appeal.

Other fundraising efforts included ‘guess the cake’ and ‘name the bear’ competitions with a chocolate ‘Pudsey’ bear among the prizes.

Becca told us they were a bit worried at first because some people who had offered to bake cakes got caught out by the power cuts affecting the islands.

But she said in the end, the event had been a huge success with lots of people, even those who don’t normally use the bank, coming in to donate.

The 5 hour Dance-a-thon arranged by Year 9 pupils, Amy, Keri, Saph, Phoebe, Zoe and Erin last week (see here) brought in £300 for the appeal while a further £85 was collected at Park House.
