Islands Hit By Power Outage

The islands were hit by a power cut yesterday morning.

Ritchie Christopher from Western Power says the outage, which hit at approximately 9.20am, was due to a piece of switching equipment that failed when operated on Tresco, causing a high voltage fuse to trip.

Most customers had power restored relatively quickly, the soonest after 5 minutes, but some St Martin’s residents had to wait around an hour for reconnection.

Ritchie added that this was a “once in 20 years” incident and unfortunate to coincide with the local planned outages for smart grid work, which confused engineers as to the cause.
