Injured Fisherman Rescued By St Mary’s Lifeboat

A 23-year old fisherman with an injury to his hand was rescued by the the St Mary’s RNLI lifeboat, The Whiteheads, just before dawn on 4th November.

The lifeboat was launched at 5.16am under the command of Coxswain Stuart Hitchins, and went to a position 15 miles west of the Isles of Scilly where the fishing vessel Nova Spero was waiting to transfer the injured crewmember to the lifeboat.

The Whiteheads arrived on the scene at 6.15am and the transfer of the casualty took place quickly despite the awkward swell.

It was felt expedient to get the injured man to hospital in Truro, Cornwall, and the RNAS Culdrose rescue helicopter was scrambled to lift the injured fisherman from the lifeboat and fly him to the mainland.
