Sports Facility Opening To Be Delayed

Former primary school at Carn Gwaval

The new sports facilities at Carn Gwaval won’t open as planned.

A problem with damp at the old primary school has delayed the work on the changing rooms and storage facility and that means it won’t be handed over on the 7th November.

Project Manager, Phil Osmond, of Mace says under what was considered to be a sound screed floor were timber battens, tile adhesive, and even carpet backing from previous floor coverings.

Also, where areas of the school had been altered over the years, areas of damp proof membrane were found to be unsound, and thin concrete laid on beach sand.

Kier have now been instructed to expose the floor areas affected and to ensure a sound base for further work. A deep-fill damp proofing system will then be laid, followed by a further damp proof membrane over the whole floor area. This will then be latexed and floor coverings laid.

Phil says he will be in a position to work out the new timeline for opening over the next few days.

An opening event had been planned for Friday 11th November with sports clubs, including the judo group, displaying their skills for the public on Saturday.

Phil apologised that the community of the isles of Scilly, that they will have to wait a little later for what will be a tremendous facility.’

Work on the new Sports Hall is unaffected.
