St Mary’s Man Taking On US Cycle Challenge

Wayne Davey

A St Mary’s paramedic wants islanders’ support as he embarks on his latest test of endurance.

Wayne Davey was one of the Scilly Boys who attempted rowing home across the Atlantic from New York, in 2008.

Now Wayne intends ending his latest challenge in the Big Apple.

He’s going to cycle the 3100 miles to the city from San Diego in 17 days.

Wayne’s raising cash for Little Harbour Children’s Hospice, Cornwall Air Ambulance and the Royal Marine Benevolent Fund with some RNAS Culdrose colleagues with whom he works on medical evacuations.

Wayne talks about his challenge

Wayne says he thinks they might have bitten off more than they can chew – he says they thought they could do the trip in 20 days but his Royal Marine friend pushed them to aim for 17 days. He says they’ll be averaging about 180 miles a day and climbing to over 11,000 feet.

Wayne says the training starts now and they have planned trips to Wales and Lincoln to practise.
