Wildlife Boardwalks In Poor Shape

The boardwalks in two of St Mary’s most visited wildlife walk areas are not in the best shape.

The wooden walkway loop around the Higher Moors is currently closed and Julie Love of the Wildlife Trust says damage was sustained when cattle got onto it. The structure isn’t designed to take that weight.

Julie says it will be repaired when the Trust have time.

The loop at the Lower Moors is also closed but bird watchers can gain access to the hides.

Julie is less certain about that route being repaired, as the walkway isn’t heavily used. She says maintenance and repairs are expensive and the planking has a 20 year life.

There are hardier solutions available now involving plastics and hardwoods from windblown trees, but Julie says that takes money.
