Elm Tree For New Gig Arrives On Islands

St Mary’s own gig builder has everything he needs to make the new Tregarthen’s gig.

An elm tree, weighing almost 2 tons, was brought over on the Gry Maritha and transported to Peter Martin at Porthloo yesterday.

Peter joked that he hasn’t seen the freight invoice yet!

He’ll work with Andy Hicks to build the new boat in time for next May’s Gig Championships.

They’ll begin the 5-month job once the Menavaur, already in the boat shed, is refurbished.

Elm is the only wood that can be used to build championship gigs and it’s not easy to source, as tree stocks were decimated by Dutch Elm disease in the 70s.

The wood for the new boat came from an estate in Northumberland.

And ironically, the last Tregarthen’s Gig has gone Dutch. It was sold to Loosdrecht gig club in the Netherlands earlier this summer.
