Council To Pay For Pollution Standby Company

The Town Hall

The Council is to hire a company that will always be on standby to clear up pollution if there’s ever an incident on the coast or the islands.

They will be employed on a retainer from January and the cost will be shared between Councils across the Westcountry. They would be expected to respond within 30 minutes of a call, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

As well as clearing up the mess, they’d also have to keep records that could be used in financial claims.

Our share of the retainer will cost our Council up to £1000 a year and we’d have to pay an additional sum if they did any work.

Are we to take it that if we didn’t pay them the retainer, they would refuse to do the cleanup if and when the occasion arose? If they would do the work anyway, why are we paying them £1,000 a year?
