Mal De Mer Club Arrives For Annual Sporting Event

Last year's Mal de Mer visitors celebrating

The Mal de Mer Club has arrived in Scilly for their annual sporting challenge against the islands.

The 41 sportsmen will take on islanders in 23 different events.

The Mal de Mer club made their first September visit 79 years ago and the trips originally gave islanders a chance to play sports they wouldn’t normally have a chance to play. Over the years, its developed into a social highlight of the year.

New and established members were given a briefing at their base at Tregarthen’s Hotel yesterday with the reminder, that this “isn’t a rugby tour.”

Jeremy Chadwick, the Mals’ spokesman, says they have six additional sportsmen this year as the recruiting-through-invitation has gone well. In particular they’ve tried to attract some younger members to the group.

He says the new recruits have been told very little about what will be expected of them although he hinted they might be pretty busy with sporting challenges over the next few days.

And Jeremy admitted that with new blood in the team, this might increase their chances of winning.
