Annual Careers Convention Taking Place This Evening

The Five Islands School

The annual school Careers Convention, Moving On, is being held at the new School tonight.

Year 10 and 11 students will be attending career-related workshops in the morning and seeing delegates in the afternoon

This evening from 6pm, all islanders are invited to learn about education or work opportunities here or on the mainland.

Last year the Army couldn’t raise the funds to come but this time there’ll be a full turnout from the forces as well as the police, NHS, and mainland colleges including Truro and Penwith College. The construction industry will be represented by Keir Western and local builders.

Island employers like the Council, Duchy and Tresco will also be there.

Penny Rogers talks about the careers fair

Penny Rogers told us the careers event is important because our 16-year olds have to make a major decision on where to go next and this gives them a chance to meet employers face-to-face.

There has been an emphasis on leaving the islands for education but its not always necessary, she says, with more local companies and organisations offering training and apprenticeships.

Penny says she’s grateful that mainland employers and learning centres come over, considering the time, cost and the small number of students here.
