Final Nominations Sought For Olympic Torchbearers

One of the London 2012 sponsors is giving us an additional chance to suggest a deserving local to carry the Olympic torch around part of its 8000-mile route around the UK.

Two different bodies have already asked for nominations and local youngsters, Lewis Johnson and Nathan Street have been put forward for consideration.

The only nomination scheme still open is being run by Olympic sponsor, Samsung.

Robin Gibson from Samsung says people here have a better chance of getting to carry the torch because there are ring fenced spaces for each local Council area, including ours, and we don’t have that many residents.

And any successful Scilly nominees will carry the torch in the Southwest, so won’t have to travel too far.

Robin says they’re looking people who’ve gone the extra mile to support their local community.

The torch will be carried for 70 days from May 19th next year and will pass close to 90% of the UK population, but there’s still no word on whether it will come to Scilly.

Euan Rodger of Island Tourism launched a Facebook campaign to bring it here instead of starting in Land’s End and yesterday, the 2012 press office said routes won’t be finalised until the end of the year.
