League Of Friends Offering Support For Family Hospital Visits

June Jones

Families who need to go to the mainland to visit children in hospital will be able to apply for assistance for travel and accommodation costs from today.

A new fund is available from the St Mary’s Community and Hospital League of Friends.

June Jones realised how costs mount when her granddaughter Zara had to go to the mainland for medical appointments recently.

June says the League wanted to offer some support and says the extra cash support could make a real difference if a child spends a long time away from Scilly.

The new fund is now open to parents and family members who have to travel to visit their kids in mainland hospitals. One parent will be subsidised and there may be money for another parent or grandparent, particularly if the stay is long.

The pot of cash can be used for expenses incurred by a parent, including car hire, train fares and overnight B&B costs.

June hopes a dinner at the Bell Rock Hotel in March will boost funds used for supporting islands’ families.
