Theatre Club Up For Several Awards

The cast of 'Present Laughter'

St Mary’s Theatre Club members are hoping their summer play will win them more awards.

The Cornwall Drama Association has nominated their performance of Noel Coward’s ‘Present Laughter’ for best play, best actor for Neil Middleton’s portrayal of Gary Essendine, Best director for Maggie Perkovic and also best costumes.

They’ll find out whether they have been successful at a ceremony in Newquay on October 29th.

Maggie says it’s nice that the women who create the costumes have been recognised. She says that the 1940s style was particularly well represented with the small detail trimming on hats and gloves making all the difference

The costumes were made by Jane Pender, Anne Farr, Betty Sherris and Mo Love with some help with sewing and stitching offered from Barbara Phillips.

Maggie Perkovic is pleased that they could win best play. It is an award that the club has won before with ‘See How They Run’ and they came second last year.

Our islands actors and crew are up against around a dozen other clubs that enter the regional contest. Maggie says, despite being nominated in four categories, there’s some strong competition within each group of finalists.

Nominee, Neil has recently left the islands for a new job on the mainland but Maggie said he was delighted when he heard the news and will be attending the ceremony in Newquay.
