Fundraiser Travels Length Of Britain For Free

Mark Pennells aboard the Scillonian III yesterday

A fundraiser has achieved his goal of getting from John O’Groats to the Isles of Scilly without spending any cash.

Mark Pennells completed his fundraising challenge yesterday for the Innervation Christian music charity, in 47 hours, arriving at St Mary’s Quay courtesy of a free ticket for the Scillonian III.

Since setting off from the north of Scotland on Sunday afternoon, he’s had lifts from Dutch tourists, been given a ride and a sofa for the night from a Scottish doctor and even hitched a lift with a showband on the road. Mark even blagged free rail travel with First Great Western.

And last night, he was relaxing with a free room at the Star Castle Hotel.

He’s been amazed by the offers of free transport he received and never waited for more than about half an hour although he says being dumped at motorway services in the small hours wasn’t much fun. Luckily, he was offered a lift by a band, which got him from Glasgow to Staffordshire.

Mark started the challenge wearing shorts and trainers but he has been collecting clothes as he has gone along. He’s even been given a shirt and tie to wear for dinner!

Mark says the key to fundraising in this way is being organised. He had ID badges and all details online so people could check out that he was genuine and he’s raised £20,000 through donations and sponsorship so far.
