Flower Festival Opens At Church

The Parish Church is full of colour and floral fragrance today as the four-day annual flower festival opens.

The event wasn’t held last year and that’s brought renewed enthusiasm for this year’s display, according to one of the florists, Penny Rogers.

The overall theme this year is celebrations and displays include one on retirement, which uses flowers to convey the feeling of looking back with satisfaction and looking ahead with anticipation.

There’s also an arrangement featuring a mannequin reaching a 70th birthday and having fun with a bottle of gin surrounded by flowers!

Jan Crawford’s display pays tribute to the 12th century German abbess, St Hildegard, who researched the medicinal properties of plants and Jan spent a day at Tresco Abbey Gardens hunting down medicinal plants for her display.

Penny says a huge amount of effort has gone into the work including sourcing the flowers and foliage as well as the various props for the display. Not everything is in season here, so some flowers have been brought in from the mainland, but she says they’ve tried to use local flowers as much as possible.
