Scilly To Helford Gig Row To Raise Funds For Hospice

A team of eight rowers are rowing from Scilly to Helford River on Thursday to raise £10,000 for the Cornwall Hospice care charity.

Although seven of the men, who are all university students, have rowed since they were 12 years old, Freddie Gleadowe says they expect the 62 nautical mile crossing to be a tough, 16 hour challenge.

Freddie says he dreamt up the idea during this year’s gig weekend and when he got home he found that other rowers had managed to do it.

Freddie says the toughest part of the challenge will be rowing around The Lizard, which is likely to take 4 fours just to cover 10 miles.

St Agnes rower, Ollie Hayes, a former Helford river rower, will arrange for some island rowers to follow the men out on Thursday morning and the men will be followed by a safety boat to make sure they are safe.

Freddie says the cash is flowing in – they’ve already got £3,500 pledged and are hoping for more to come. You can support the men at JustGiving.com
