Handbell Ringers Seek New Recruits

They make it look and sound easy but anybody trying their hand at handbell ringing will soon realise you need excellent timing, dexterity and the ability to read music well.

Now, as we’re entering Autumn, the St Mary’s group is looking for new recruits for a busy Autumn and Christmas programme.

Mary Ratcliffe, their spokesperson, says their bells, which date back to the 1880s are owned by the parish church and may have been used originally for bellringing practice.

She says playing handbells is unlike many instruments, because you have to listen closely to what your fellow players are doing.

Anne says they need six members for each performance and the group are always looking for new members.
