High Take-up Of New Rate Relief By Scilly Business

Scilly businesses are making the most of the Government’s new rate relief.

Eligible small businesses that occupy buildings with a rateable value of up to £6,000 pay no rates until September 2012. And there are reductions on a sliding scale up to a £12,000 rateable value.

Our islands have seen the 9th highest take up in the UK, with 48% of Scilly’s 179 registered businesses taking up the discount.

The Council’s Director of Finance, Peter Lawrence, says it is “as he would expect” adding that Scilly has, understandably, a high concentration of small business.

The Government is also giving our Town Hall the power to set local discounts on business rates in the future. They want councils to be able to support local firms and shops if they are struggling or encourage new start-up enterprises.
