Rotary Club Fun Day Taking Place On Bank Holiday Monday

Chicken racing

This Monday it’s the last of the big summer events for the islands – the Rotary Club Bank Holiday Funday on Holgate’s Green.

The event has developed from the former carnival, which fell victim to high insurance costs. The programme includes a barbecue, live chicken racing, Brian Thomas with his disco and a variety of stalls and games.

Organiser Tim Guthrie says it may be one of the last outings for the current bouncy castle. It isn’t in the best state – it’s sprung a few leaks this year and the compressor packed up for the Tresco Fete. But Tim says the Rotary, who own it, intend to raise money to buy another as it brings in the cash for their causes.

The money raised this year will go towards a general Rotary appeal which aims to eradicate polio rather than their most recent beneficiary the Shelterbox charity. Tim says luckily there haven’t been any major disasters recently that require the life-saving kits.

It is one of the busiest times of the year for many members involved in tourism and Tim says he’s grateful that people find the time to support the event.
