Bowling Green Has Exceeded Expectations In First Year

It’s over a year since the ambition of St Mary’s builder, Richard Chiverton, was realised when the bowling green he had planned for 20 years finally opened.

And after one year of use by both islanders and visitors, Richard says the bills for the green, which is based at the golf club, have all been paid and demand has exceeded his expectations.

Residents and visitors can place £2.50 in the collection box for a game or regular users can buy annual membership and take part in the Friday night sessions with David Corners.

Richard says he’s been trying to attract visitors and they may be surprised how easy it is to access the green and bowls.

Many locals tell him they don’t know about the bowling green, but he says anyone is welcome to come and give it a go – users range from the youth club and school to his wife Jane’s OAP group and recently a group of Bow Green’s builders spent an afternoon off there. Richard says younger competitive players love it too.

Richard added that visitors like the fact that you are trusted to pay with an honesty box and they often comment on the unique location, which he describes as “probably the best in the country.”
