Organisers Say Holiday Play Scheme Is Best Ever

Local and visiting primary-age youngsters are halfway through their holiday play scheme and according to one of the organisers, it’s been the best yet.

It’s a challenge coming up with new innovative ideas each year, but Meriel Williams, now in her 12th year of operating the scheme, says the Council’s children services team know they’ve done their job when kids say it was fun.

But there’s a serious side to the programme – it’s been designed to offer childcare for working parents at the height of the holiday season.

Meriel says the success of the playscheme is all about coming up with new ideas every year.

New attractions this time have included hip-hop dancing inspired by the street dancers Diversity and youngsters have learned more about Scilly. They visited Glandore Gallery and Stephen Morris got them guessing which places his paintings captured.

And she says next week they have  “under the sea” themed activities including a trip to see the seals, followed by a week of activities related to space with astronaut’s icecream and a space party.

Meriel says we’re fortunate that the scheme is well funded by the Council and this has allowed them to provide an excellent quality service.
