The Rough Island Band To Make Rare Live Appearances This Weekend

Songs from a second album by The Rough Island Band will be performed at three islands’ venues at the weekend.

The band will be performing at the Turk’s Head on Saturday, The New Inn on Sunday lunchtime, with a gig at the Old Town Inn on Sunday evening.

All of the music on the album was recorded and produced on St Agnes but it’s getting the band together to play live that’s a challenge for Piers Lewin, as the only member based here.

Because the band doesn’t get together to play live very often, they’re always looking for new ways to get their music out to their fans. Their music’s been used in promotional material by the Tourist Information Centre and the Steamship Company.

And Piers thinks the fast broadband network, when it is installed next year, could bring new opportunities by allowing musicians on the mainland to play alongside islanders using the internet.

Piers met the band while everyone was living on St Agnes, but as the only member living there all year, he’s more aware of the negative side of life on the island and that’s reflected in the tracks he’s written, which have a different feel to those written by the other band members.

Piers says he’s looking forward to the rare live performances and told us there’s a difference between playing the lunchtime and evening gigs for him as musician. At lunchtimes, he says, the music is more in the background, whereas for evening gigs, people get more involved with the performance.

The next project may take the band into video with the creation of a DVD, as a couple of the band members are filmmakers too, but Piers says it will be more artistic than just filming a gig, possibly even animation.
