St Martin’s Fete Today

It’s the St Martin’s fete today and organisers hope to match last year’s £8000 raised towards the new Community Hall building appeal.

The event is centred on Pool Green and mixes barbeque food and a beer tent with unusual events like snail racing, a human fruit machine and a 75m seawater slide from the dunes onto the beach.

Audrey Davies, on the organising committee, says because the fete is a week later this year, the regular visitors who normally help out aren’t available, but she says the new visitors have been only too ready to join in. There’s a cartoon character-themed cake competition and several people on the campsite are making cakes and running stalls too.

Audrey admitted there can be a bit of competition between the Off-Island fetes because, she says, it’s nice to be able to put on the best summer event.

This year, because of tides, attendees will be dropped off at the Hotel Quay in Lower Town and they’ll be picked up from the quay nearest the fete. It all starts at 12.30pm today (Wednesday).
