St Mary’s Bike Hire Has New Owner

One of St Mary’s oldest business’, St Mary’s Bike Hire on The Strand, is in new ownership today.

After 24 years in charge, Sean Lewis has sold the cycle hire service that his parents Sid and Sheila started in 1961, to Mark Prebble.

Mark has come from Devon where he worked as a landscape gardener.

He’s previously owned a bookshop but has never worked with bikes before although he is a keen cyclist and has ridden around Europe and the Far East.

Mark only visited Scilly for the first time this year – he came for his birthday and discovered why his friends spoke so highly of the islands. And he hasn’t been back to the mainland since.

He says he and his partner have been looking for a new challenge for a couple of years and has “jumped in with both feet.”

Mark says he knows he is buying a business with a 50-year history behind it and he’ll make few changes at first. He also says he’s received some good advice from previous owner, Sean.

Mark says he grew up in a small village in the New Forest and his family was in the tourism business. More recently he’s lived in Tavistock so is used to life in a small, close-knit community. He’s not had much time for social activity yet but hopes the winter will allow him to set up a social group centred on his passion for cycling.
