Travel Operators Asked To Make Earlier Poor Weather Decisions

Travel operators in Scilly have been asked to make earlier announcements on whether visitors need to find accommodation for the night in the case of weather disruption.

This follows the problems on Wednesday this week, when the weather closed in and flights were suspended. The decision to end flying wasn’t made until after 5pm, meaning many Town Hall staff had already gone home making it more of a challenge to arrange alternative accommodation.

Rhona Holland, who heads up the Emergency Planning team says they managed to find a place for everyone. Most guesthouses and hotels were full and as the Scillonian III had sailed, her team agreed to work late to find a solution.

It was thought they may have to open up the school hall and Council staff volunteered to spend the night there accompanying guests.

That didn’t happen in the end as local accommodation providers took 8 people and 12 visitors, including a family of 6, were put up in the school boarding house, Mundesley House.

Rhona says Island Properties and St Mary’s Hall Hotel were very helpful in providing bedding and towels as there were none ready for the unexpected guests.
