Health Centre Will Be Run By Helston GPs

St Mary's Health Centre

The NHS has appointed the organisation that will run the St Mary’s Health Centre practice for the next year.

A consortium of eight GPs based in Helston will take over on Monday.

Rachel Crawley from the Primary Care Trust told councillors about the arrangement yesterday afternoon in the Health Committee meeting.

The appointment ends some uncertainties about the direction of the Health Centre following the retirement of Doctors Jeffries and Dr Dalton.

The PCT has been the legal operator of the service since the local GPs left.

Councillor Amanda Martin was reassured that one of the members of the Helston GP team, Dr Maggie Gringhuis, who has been coming over monthly to deal with female patients, will continue her liaison.

And another member of the practice, Dr Kevin Old, sits on a panel of doctors who shape some of the policy within the local health service. Rachel felt this could heighten Scilly’s profile in local NHS circles and could keep the practice updated on the latest projects.

Councillors wanted to know why just a 12 month arrangement has been put in place.

Rachel explained that the recent public engagement exercise has defined Islanders’ needs and they will put together an all-encompassing health plan, incorporating changes at the hospital when its leaves NHS control, potentially in October, to become a community interest company.

Staffing would be the responsibility of the new operating group of GPs.

Rachel says there is a commitment to end duplication of services, to save both patients and staff time and money .

The PCT will be abolished in 2013 but Rachel assured counsellors that there would put a long-term solution for the GP practice in place before it was abolished.

Our doctors are expected to operate an out-of-hours service, deal with patient trauma in the accident and emergency department of the hospital and work as backup midwives. That’s not the normal situation on the mainland.

There will be no staff changes at the Health Centre at this stage but the Helston practice manager will be working to support the existing admin and medical staff.
