Emergency Mobile Phone Technology To Be Rolled Out

Council Chambers at the Old Wesleyan Chapel

Councillors have had an update on who is entitled to use a special mobile SIM card that’s more likely to get through if there’s a major emergency.

In an incident, many people may use their mobile phones to make calls and the islands network could become congested.

Twelve islanders with key roles in directing operations in the event of a major incident will have access to the phone network and their phones will be less likely to get the network busy message.

Most of the Director-level senior Council staff as well as the airport manager and the water department will be able to upgrade their handsets in an emergency.

The Duchy of Cornwall harbourmaster, the Land Steward and Tresco heliport will also have access to the technology.
