Council Accounts Criticised Over 1p Discrepancy

The Town Hall

The Audit Commission, the official body that scrutinises Town Hall finances and procedures has recommended that the Finance Department implements controls after finding a discrepancy of one penny.

The auditor admits this is trivial but adds there should be controls implemented to make sure the accounts balance.

Richard McCarthy said he felt this was a bit harsh, while Councillor Fred Ticehurst joked that it was an “unmitigated financial disaster.”

Peter Lawrence said that the auditors would argue that it doesn’t matter if it’s 1p or £100,000 out – if the system works correctly it should balance.
