Anglican Minister to Stay For Another Year

Canon Peter Walker

Scilly’s Anglican minister is staying in the chaplaincy role longer than expected and he won’t be leaving in the autumn.

He’ll be here for at least another year.

Canon Peter Walker has been combining his Truro Cathedral position with work on the islands and that has meant travelling to and from the mainland.

It was thought that his position here would last just one year from last autumn, but Peter says a change in his cathedral duties to Canon Librarian will reduce his mainland travel. He added that, although he originally said he’d stay for a year, he realised very early on that he’d end up staying in the role for longer.

Peter says his new role will mean he can spend more time here on the islands instead of having elongated stays on the mainland.

The sharing of roles between here and the mainland was an innovative approach to finding a chaplain for the islands and Peter says that he can use the Internet to stay in touch with Truro and perform his two different functions. He says it’s likely that the future post holder here will also maintain a similar job-share role with the Cathedral.
