Fudge made on our islands could be promoted in the range of produce selected for the London Olympics.

Michelle Mapplethorpe has just won another award for her confectionery, a double gold at The Guild of Fine Food awards for her Lemon and Meringue fudge. They are the UK trade association for people making or selling high quality local, regional or speciality food and drink.

Michelle says they have an interest in unique locations and that helped draw attention to her St Mary’s-made produce.

Gaining their approval means Michelle will be asked to meet judges in London in the autumn and if all goes well she could become fudgemaker to London 2012.

The business has developed rapidly and she now employs five people over an average week, who help her make and export these sweets to regional airports and Mole Valley farmers.

Michelle says she’s looking to grow the business as far as she can this year. She’ll be attending a couple of big trade shows, at the NEC and Expo West and she’s also taken adverts in ‘Woman and Home’ and ‘The Lady’ magazines.
