New Primary School Sports Day Is Big Success

The postponed primary school sports day took place yesterday on the Garrison while work continues on the new school site and sports field.

This year, some new events like the high jump and javelin were introduced for the younger pupils.

Head of PE, Martin Songhurst, told us the pupils were asked what they wanted in their sports day and with the Olympics coming up in London next year, they were keen to get some ‘real’ athletics events into their day.

So this year, there was less ‘egg and spoon’ and more ‘turbo javelin’ and Martin’s hoping to add discus to the event next year.

Martin says the new format sports day has gone really well, and the pupils have pulled out all the stops – Year 3 and 4 pupils achieved high jump heights of up to a metre in the first year they have tried that challenge. And he says it wasn’t just the tall kids that did well!

The venue for next year’s event is still unclear.

Tim Garratt told us the primary school bases take it in turn to host the event and next year it’s St Agnes, but Tim thinks it would be good to use the multiuse games area at the new school base.
