Penzance Chamber Fight To Preserve Helicopters

Penzance Chamber of Commerce says it will do anything it can to preserve the helicopter link from West Cornwall to St Mary’s and Tresco.

The business group met last week to discuss concerns that developments in the town could potentially jeopardise the British International Helicopters move to St Erth.

BIH want to sell their current heliport site to Sainsburys and that application will go before the Cornwall planning committee at the end of September

Now Mike Waters, Chamber Chair, has requested an urgent meeting with Council staff and Councillors there to discuss a housing development on the Penzance Wharfside carpark, which may also include a supermarket. A report by consultants GVI Grimley recommends one there.

If that plan was adopted, government guidelines to keep retail developments in town centres could force Cornwall Council to refuse Sainsburys plan for the heliport site.

Our helicopter service is dependent on the cash from that site sale.

Mike says there’ll be a consultation over the Wharfside carpark plans in September and that’s close to the heliport decision date.
