Plan To Create Wellbeing Hub At Old Primary School

Existing gym and Lifelong Learning site at Carn Thomas

A new, improved gym for St Mary’s and exercise equipment for the Off-Islands could be available next year.

The Town Hall will need to be successful in a grant application for new kit and that will mean the current sports gear from Carn Thomas could be taken to other islands.

Director of Community Services, Penny Penn Howard, told us it’s part of a plan to create a Health and Wellbeing hub in the current Primary School at Carn Gwavel after the new school opens in September.

She says the intention is to bring all services together which should allow more efficient use of resources and provide a better service including being able to keep the gym open longer, potentially from 9am to 9pm. Plans could also include a crèche, to allow parents to access the gym or learning facilities.

Penny says the Council are making a bid to the Big Lottery Fund to make some internal changes to the layout of the building and for new gym equipment.

She says the hope is to create a gym area within the current primary school hall area, improve the shower and changing facilities and purchase new equipment such as jogging machines and cross trainers.

She says the sports hall, which is currently under construction, came with clear targets as a condition of the £1.2m funding from Sport England. This includes reaching a significant level of adult usage, and she says the Council are working on a business plan that will ensure the hall is viable financially, while still keeping it affordable to users.

Penny added that the Memory Café is an important part of their plans. Carn Gwavel will provide a permanent home for the scheme, which could be used as a day centre on other days of the week.

Penny says the Council wants to know your views, and her team have put together a short survey covering the various services to be included in the hub.
