Cricket – Hound Cup St Mary’s v Off-Islands

Report by Ben Jakes

25 over game played Sunday 3rd July on Tresco.

St Mary’s won the toss and put the Off-Islands in to bat. This seemed to be a good decision with the Off-Islands being 44 with 3 wickets down after the first ten overs.

The middle of their innings was steadied by Angus Spencer and Dave Hamilton, scoring 41 and 15 respectively, but after some tight bowling and a good fielding display, including some good catches taken by St Mary’s, the Off-Islands were restricted to 110 all out in 23 overs.

The pick of St Mary’s bowlers was Mark Hicks who took 4 wickets in only two overs plus a run out.

In reply, St Mary’s made steady progress but consistently lost wickets – just as each batsmen got going they got out, James Francis the only batsman that saw it through to the end, scoring 45 not out, in the end Ben Jakes saw it home with him scoring 15 not out.

St Mary’s scored 112 for 5 off 20.3 overs, winning the game by 5 wickets.

After the game, Sam Hicks the Off-Island captain presented Ben Jakes, the St Mary’s captain, with the Hound Cup, thanking Tresco CC for their hospitality and for the running of the refreshments, and for a good game played in the right spirit, on such a stunning day.

Then all players and some supporters headed off to the New Inn, to finish off what cider they had left.

Thanks go to the two umpires for officiating on such a hot day.
