Police Stop Late Night Cyclists To Reduce Theft

Residents cycling around St Mary’s at night may get stopped by the police.

Police Sergeant, Charlie Craig, says its part of a police initiative to reduce cycle thefts on the island. He says his officers have been stopping people cycling late in the evening and asking them questions to determine if their bike has been stolen.

Charlie says the majority of the cyclists are happy with being stopped and understand the reasons, but he says a few have been upset by the actions.

He says bikes tend to go missing after the pubs close, when people are looking to find an easy way to get home.

Charlie told us it’s too early to tell whether it’s working but has asked people to be patient if they are stopped as the police are only trying to reduce theft.
