Branson Not Attending Challenger Celebrations

The Virgin Atlantic Challenger II in 1986

Richard Branson won’t be coming over to the islands today for a reception to commemorate the successful Atlantic crossing of the Virgin Atlantic Challenger II 25 years ago (see our report here).

But many members of the team will be here, including Virgin Airlines MD, Steve Ridgway.

Navigator and Bryher regular, Dag Pike, sailor Chay Blyth as well as former Tomorrow’s World presenter, Peter Macann, will all breakfast at the Blues Restaurant.

Then there’ll be an official reception by the Council Chair and Vice-Chair, Mike Hicks and Marian Bennett, in the Town Hall.

After looking at photos and memorabilia from the day, the party will on go to the Harbourside Hotel, where islanders operated a control room know at the time as the ‘Yacht Club’.

After lunch at Juliet’s Garden, the party will travel to Bishop Rock Lighthouse on the Cyclone.

Islanders who were involved, including Barneslie Ward, Ginger Jim and Jackie Prichard have been asked to attend.
