School Gig Crew Win Gold In Cornwall Competition

A mixed gig crew from the Five Islands School has won the gold medal in the Cornwall Sports Partnership School Games yesterday.

There were five boats in the first race on Stithians Lake yesterday and in two races our kids came first.

Martin Songhurst says they completed both races with impressive leads and ‘walked’ one by 10 lengths.

He admits that he is nervous when he attends mainland events and worries that we’ll face a drubbing from competitors that are unknown quantity to islanders.

But he says the youngsters were a credit to themselves and to the school.

The rowers were Beth Thomas, Nicole Stephan, Hannah Sibley, Sam Eaton, Benjy Jenkins and Jordan Penhaligon.

They were supplied with a gig and cox.
