Islands Celebrate Armed Forces Day

Scene from last year's Armed Forces Day

It’s Armed Forces Day today and our islands will pay tribute to the men and women who serve our country in the military at home and abroad, past and present.

Former and current personnel, the army cadets and the police, fire, ambulance and coastguard crews will march in uniform in the parade down The Strand to Holgate’s Green from 1pm this afternoon.

Thirty Brownies and Guides will be part of the event as well.

Fiona Robson says it is important that the girls understand the role the Army, Navy and Air Force play in protecting the freedoms we expect in our country

There’ll be words from former personnel on the green afterwards and a chance to buy cakes and refreshments to raise cash for the work of the Royal British Legion.

Glynne Lucas says that as a result of the parade, there will be no tours on Saturday afternoon on the Island Rover bus. The only tour available will be 10:15am from the Green.
