Cricket Tresco v. St Mary’s on Thursday 23rd June

Report by Ben Jakes

Tresco won the toss and put St Mary’s into bat.

This looked like a good decision to start off with as St Mary’s lost three quick wickets, bringing Bradley Hawker (his last game for St Mary’s before flying back to Australia this week) and Sprog together.

Some big swinging (though not necessarily hitting anything) bought the game back St Mary’s way, with the pair scoring 60 and 32 respectively and leaving St Mary’s at 129 off their 20 overs for six wickets.

Dave Johnson was the pick of Tresco’s bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 11 runs off his 4 overs.

Tresco’s innings did not start well, with one of the openers being run out first ball with a direct hit from Sprog and this seemed to set the tone for the rest of their innings with only Dave Hamilton and John Taylor holding some resistance to some very tight St Mary’s bowling.

Anthony Gilbert and Ben Jakes both ended up with three wickets a piece.

St Mary’s won by 74 runs.

There were two champagne moments of the day.

The first was the best catch that I have seen over here when Kane Goddard, having the ball hit over his head, chased the ball twenty yards before diving to take a clean catch with the ball going away from him.

In the second moment, which I think might be a record, Darryl Shave managed to register two ducks in a game the second being a Golden Duck!

On Sunday 26th June there is a double wicket competition on St Martin’s. The boat leaves at 11am from St Mary’s for an 11.30am registration.

Everyone is welcome, there will be a bar and BBQ with the bar being run by Neil from St Martin’s Hotel’s Bistro, so expect the Strawberry Pimms to be flowing. Should be a great day out, especially as last years competition was such a good success!
