Ice Skating Rink Brings Midsummer Madness To Islands

Ice rink organiser, Jim Johnson

It’ll be a first for the islands this weekend, when youngsters will be able to go ice skating on St Mary’s.

The Council is erecting a portable ice rink outside the youth hub at Carn Thomas.

Organiser Jim Johnson will be putting it together and says it’s meant to be as authentic as the real thing.

Jim says the youngsters requested the ice rink after visiting a rink in Plymouth last year. He says it might seem a bit unseasonable but is really just a bit of “summer madness.”

From Radio Scilly

Hear Jim Johnson talking about the ice rink…

It’ll be coming over on the Scillonian on Friday and will be set up ready for skating on Saturday morning.

He says the sessions areall  booked up but people should still come along – the sessions are one and a half hours long and not everyone will use up their full time.

Jim says a number of islanders have said they have figure skating experience and he’s welcoming them to come and show off their skills and coach the youngsters over the weekend.
