Service Marks Start Of Armed Forces Week

A small crowd marked the raising of the Armed Forces Week flag

Council staff were allowed to leave their desks and join former members of the armed services today, as a service in the Park marked the start of Armed Forces Week.

Beginning at 11am this morning, there were ceremonies across the country as the specially designed flag was raised.

Revered Charlie Gibbs and the Chairman of Council, Mike Hicks, addressed the crowd this morning.

Mike says it’s an important celebration of all serving personnel and a way for those who have lost friends and family to remember them. He added that there are several families on the islands with members currently serving in the forces.

Armed Forces Day will be this Saturday, 25th June, and there will be an event on Holgate’s Green to mark the occasion with tea and cake being served.

The flag will be lowered in a week’s time.
