Appeal For Help With Armed Forces Day

Smudge Smith

Armed forces day will be held a week tomorrow, Saturday the 25th.

The event will be marked by the usual parade along the strand to Holgate’s Green.

Council Chairman Mike Hicks will address the crowd and the Reverends Steven Wild and Trevor McCabe, a former Royal Navy Padre and both from Cornwall, will lead the service.

Organiser Smudge Smith says he’s grateful to Mike for helping with the event, particularly for covering the insurance costs from the Council Chairman’s fund.

And he has appealed for more volunteers on the day to help prepare for the event and to bake cakes for sale. Rotary is providing the marquee and tea tent.

Smudge told us it’s difficult getting service personnel to say a few words at the event. He says ex-service people on the islands don’t seem to want to come forward and join the British Legion and they’re always desperate for new members, adding that for November, he’d like to hand over the role of standard bearer as he says his knees and back won’t take it much longer!

This year, money raised will go to the Royal British Legion rather than Help for Heroes although Smudge says the two organisations are working closely together these days.
