Successful Dog Show For Vet Support Group

Best in Show winner, Rover, the rescue greyhound

Around £1000 was raised by the Isles of Scilly Vet Support Group on Saturday with their 4th Annual Dog Show.

That means just £19,000 is needed to pay off the new surgery and vet accommodation in the £190,000 project.

When that’s paid off, the group will just raise cash for ongoing equipment upgrades.

This year’s event took place on the field by the new veterinary surgery although crippling event insurance nearly brought things to a halt. However, one of the organisers, Bill Wilson, told us that NFU Mutual stepped in and offered free insurance for the event.

The change of location didn’t deter people from attending, with numbers similar to previous years’ events – around 200 people turned up and 60 dogs entered the competition.

Bill says this year’s total raised was fantastic, helped by the fact that the Vet Support Group had made all the refreshments themselves and each show category had been sponsored by a local business.

The winner of Best in Show was Rover, an 11 year old rescue greyhound owned by Joe Verne. Joe says Rover might get a tasty treat for winning although “his teeth aren’t really up to it anymore.”

The winners of the other categories were as follows:

  • Most Handsome Dog: Jasper
  • Prettiest Bitch: Ziva (who originally won Most Handsome Dog until it was quickly established she was in fact a female)
  • Waggiest Tail: Milly (defending champ for the 3rd year running)
  • Best Owner/Dog Lookalike: Jess & Annie
  • Best Child Handler: Charlie & Alf
  • Best Puppy: Ruby
  • Golden Oldie: Rover
