Public Requested To Help In Big Beach Clean

Maria Wilby, helping to organise the Big Green Beach Clean

The AONB and the school Green Team are teaming up over the next four weeks to do a Big Green Beach Clean.

The group will be meeting every Saturday over the next 4 weeks to try and make a dent in the rubbish that is washed onto our island’s shores and they’ll start around the garrison tonight.

Picking up rubbish may not seem like fun for teenagers, but Maria Wilby, who’s helping to organise the beach clean, told us that the youngsters requested to do a beach clean themselves saying they really enjoy it and they’re very committed to keeping Scilly clean – although Maria also told us she makes cakes for the team which helps!

Maria says the more isolated beaches can get quite littered with waste that’s washed up, adding that some extraordinary items do turn up and the group keep some of the junk and try to identify where it’s come from – they’ve seen items from places such as Russia.

The group are grateful for any help from the general public too. The beach cleans take place in the evening which works better around the kid’s busy schedules and also with the tides.

Tonight’s meeting place is the Old Wesleyan Chapel at 6pm.
