Stride for Life Walk Set For Bank Holiday Sunday

Beryl Read, one of the organisers of the Stride For Life Fundraiser

The fourth Stride for Life Cancer Research UK  5km walk/run sets off tomorrow at 11am from Holgate’s Green.

The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the islands’ branch of the cancer charity

Organiser, Beryl Read says she hopes that problems with the economy wont affect the fundraising target.

The fundraiser will start on Holgates Green on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday with the registration between 10.ooam and 10:45am.

At 11am, as in previous years there’ll be a minute-long silence to give attendees a chance to think about everyone they know who has died of cancer .

Participants were asked to sign up ahead of the event but if you haven’t done that yet, you can still just turn up tomorrow and Beryl says visitors are very welcome to take part too.

Last year's Stride for Life event

Beryl added that anyone you can go around at their own pace, but don’t stop for a picnic as one entrant did one year!

Last year 127 people took part and she’s hoping that there will be a bigger turnout this year. The route for the 5km walk or run is broadly the same but will start at the Green and pass the Park and then along Church Street.

There will be a charity cake sale on the Green and Beryl has asked everyone to drop off their cakes in the morning.
