Weekend Aircraft Noise Probably From Giant US Carrier

The giant US carrier, the USS Enterprise

Some islanders were awoken at around 11 o’clock on Sunday night by the sound of loud aircraft overhead.

The jets appeared to cross the islands for around 10 minutes and the sound was also heard by St Martin’s resident Mandy Goddard on Saturday afternoon.

Mandy says so many people on her home island heard the disruption, it was a hot topic for discussion on Sunday.

St Mary’s Harbourmaster Dale Clarke thinks the source of the aerial movements may be the American aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise, which is undertaking live firing exercises in the western approaches, as he heard their messages on VHF radio channels last week.

The USS Enterprise, launched in 1960, is the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and is the longest naval vessel in the world.
