Island Tourism Backs Single Tourism Body

Sabine Schraudolp, co-chair of Island Tourism

Island Tourism has backed a recommendation from the Blue Sail report for a single tourism body for our Islands.

The consultants have recommended the disbanding of Island Tourism, Island Marketing and the Tourist Board in favour of one, overall tourism body representing the entire sector.

Co-chair Sabine Schraudolph told us that Island Tourism backs the proposal and that their group should fold, but some attendees at the meeting yesterday in St Mary’s Hall Hotel voiced concern that they may not find it so easy to influence discussions with one large body.

Euan Rodger, the other co-chair of the group said the time is now right to bring the different organisations together ‘under one umbrella and working together’.

However, he also warned that there needs to be more financial support from those in the private sector who benefit from promotion of tourism on the islands.

One major change that members suggested is for Scilly to have it’s own accommodation rating scheme as the Visit Britain accreditation isn’t right for many islands providers.
