Scilly Boatbuilder to Build New St Mary’s Gig

The Tregarthen’s gig, which was built in 1999, is to be replaced with a new model built by local boatbuilder Peter Martin.

It will take up to six months to build and will be ready in time for the World Pilot Gig Championships 2012.

Peter’s newest gigs performed well over the weekend and the boat he built for Tresco and Bryher, the Alfie Jenkins, came first in the Womens Veterans race, with his new gig commissioneed for Mounts Bay, Cormoran, coming second.

That gig was only launched on Friday.

His commision for the a Dutch crew, the Flying Dutchman, which was built the previous year also came second overall in the womens’ races.

The new St Marys gig will be paid for by a mainland businessman who says he wants to contribute to the future of sport on the islands and celebrate the islands’ unique sporting heritage.

Jeff Marston, Chairman of Island Marketing, says “At this time of cutbacks, it
is great to see continued investment in the islands’ traditional sport”
